Derek Bell + Andy Rouse
Beauties and The Beast
The Jaguar XJ12C was entered into the 1976 + 1977 Group 2 class of the European Touring Car Championship by the Ralph Broad-owned team Broadspeed, Broad having acquired the contract from Jaguar to do so a year earlier in 1975.
A blistering one-lap pace masked poor reliability and excess weight rendered the big Jag uncompetitive against lighter opponents, though not before Derek Bell and Andy Rouse had gained an admirable number of pole positions and led a significant number of race-laps. In the artist's eyes, the Jag XJ12C is one of the most awe-inspiring racing cars in existence; few others can match its stance and brutish good looks.
Andy Rouse is one of the most successful British racing drivers, sitting second in the all-time rankings of British Saloon Car Championship/British Touring Car Championship wins. Derek Bell has been prolific on-track, securing five outright Le Mans 24 Hours victories, three wins at the Daytona 24 Hours and two World Sportscar Championships, as well as competing in Formula One for marques such as Ferrari and McLaren.
Legends, the three of them.
