Supporting Act

The BMW M1 PROCAR series was devised as a supporting race series at European Formula One® World Championship weekends and which made its debut in the 1979 season, the first title being taken by triple world champion Niki Lauda. Utilising the M1 that BMW had originally planned to develop for the World Sportscar Championship before a change of regulations required 400 road cars to be produced to homologate the type for the new Group 4 category, Formula One® drivers who were not under brand obligations to their teams were able to compete in the M1s for additional prize money. 1980 saw the series' footprint expand beyond being simply a supporting role for Formula One®, and was won by Nelson Piquet, with that year's Formula One® World Drivers' Champion, Alan Jones, taking second place, and Hans-Joachim Stuck, third.

Nelson Piquet is a Brazilian former racing driver and multiple Formula One® World Champion. In 14 seasons in Formula One®, Piquet gained three Drivers' Championships in 1981 and 1983 driving for Brabham, and in 1987 driving for Williams. In those 14 years he amassed 23 race wins, 60 podiums, 24 pole positions and 23 fastest laps.

The car presented in this print is Piquet's PROCAR championship-winning BMW M1 from the 1980 season.
