Hans J. Stuck
The Porsche 962 was developed in response to safety concerns regarding the Porsche 956. Porsche wanted to enter the 956 into the American IMSA GTP Championship but were prevented from doing so as the pedal box in the 956 was situated beyond the front axle. To ensure eligibility into the IMSA, the 962 was developed to move the pedal box behind the centreline of the axle and the addition of a roll cage further enhanced safety. The 962 won the World Sportscar Championship crown in 1985 and 1986, the IMSA GTP Championship between 1985 and 1988, the Interserie Championship from 1987 to 1992, the ADAC Supercup from 1986 to 1989, the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1986 and 1987 and five victories in the Daytona 24 Hours in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1989 and 1991.
